Loveless Gift to the World Amplifier
Magazine If you're attracted to shiny metal objects, then you won't be able to take your ears off Gift to the World, Loveless' first full-length. Beginning with the couldn't-be-more aptly titled opener "Go," these Bostonians slam into song after song with big bossy guitars, sneering vocals and thwacking drums. Mostly, its Dave Wanamaker's show (he's the singer and they're his songs), but former solo artist Jen Trynin lends a feminine presence that's felt in both her supple strumming and in her sympathetic backing vocals. The subject matter's not kid stuff and, despite meat factory-sized hooks, tracks like "You Wore Me Out," "Darling Would You" and "Suicide Machines," wrestle with messy issues such as depression and death. But the music is so decidedly upbeat that Gift is no downer. - Eliot Wilder
